Absolutely no way this is a Caravaggio

There isn't much to say. The Vatican claimed it was Caravaggio, then they retracted the statement.

I think most of us can tell immediately that this is not a Caravaggio.

Why would they make such a claim in the first place without doing their homework? That's the question.

Hello Richard,
I think even a non expert like me can say that. I find the most interesting part, for what is visible from the photo, are the head and the left arm of Saint Lawrence as well as the right hand of one of the executioners, like said in the article.

Clearly it was his brother Pete Caravaggio; itinerant cobbler and hobbyist painter. Not many people know, but it was Pete who gave Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio his first set painting lessons; and his first pair of shoes.
